Washington, DC – June 16, 2020 – While Porsche may be ending its factory program in the North American IMSA Championship at the end of the current season, German outfit Molitor-Racing-Systems GT-Racing is delighted to announce that it will crossing the Atlantic to race in the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama. A close ally of Porsche Motorsports, Team MRS has no fewer than 16 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup and 911 GT3 R race cars participating in various series around the world already, a number that will only increase as they join the US competition arena.
MRS GT-Racing was founded in 1998 by mastercraftsman Karsten Molitor and former Racing Driver Iris Dorr. Their headquarters in Lonsee-Luizhausen near the town of Ulm, in the southern German state of Baden-Württemberg, was built in 2000 and is about an hour drive from Porsche Motorsport in Weissach. In 2003, MRS decided to enter the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany and in parallel, the Porsche Supercup, making 2020 an impressive 18th consecutive season of single marque racing for the team with two model changes of the Porsche 911 GT3 in that time.
MRS GT are pioneers of customer racing, an area in which they have been hugely successful. Now expanding into North America, we spoke to Karsten this week about his plans not just for this season, but for the years ahead, “After being part of the Porsche one make cup family for 18 years, we want to be part of it when Porsche North America increases their activities in the US. In the US we can participate in the entire one make cup pyramid without neglecting our performance at the Porsche MOBIL 1 Supercup. Coming to the United States is a great opportunity to show our experience and to get established in one of the biggest and most important motorsport markets on the globe.”
This is certainly a well thought out and properly planned move by the crack German outfit, as Karsten went on to explain, “We’ve been watching the American motorsport scene for a while and we found some things which are missed here in Europe. There is such a great fan community of motorsport lovers. They highly appreciate being able to get close to the teams and drivers, thus bringing weekend racing back to its roots.”
The family and fan friendly atmosphere of motor racing in North America is something Karsten and his crew are clearly looking forward to when he added, “A gathering of motorsport lovers is a great event, plus there are fantastic tracks in the US and some of them have been on our bucket list for a long time. As a close Porsche family member, we feel that we should be involved in this part of the world as well.”
Though geared towards the future, MRS GT remains steeped in tradition and retains the values and standards that have brought them so far already. Perhaps surprisingly, each new racing car is personally tested by the team management. In the cockpit of the 991 model of the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, Karsten can tell after only a few metres how the modifications made from its 997 predecessor have made the car feel different, and from there go straight into a detailed technical analysis. For business partner and former racing driver Iris Dorr, it’s her well-trained gut feeling that contributes tremendous expertise when it comes to buying new vehicles. There’s racing in the blood at MRS GT as well as admirable commitment, as was evident when Karsten added, “We´re coming to stay! We would like to establish ourselves and become a reliable part of the scene. We want to deliver the best possible performance and would love to motivate new drivers and young talents to join our team in order to follow their dreams.” This sounds like a truly outstanding opportunity, and one we’re sure will be popular with the American Racing fraternity. As for the series MRS GT are entering, 2020 will be the 16th season of what is the largest of Porsche’s 20 single-make Cup Challenge series in the world, the American Championship having started in 2005. The cars are very closely matched in terms of specifications and performance, so it’s a competition renowned for wheel-to-wheel, very dynamic racing. The series takes a tour of some of the top tracks in North America including Daytona, Watkins Glen, Road America, Sebring, Road America, Virginia International Raceway and Laguna Seca. It means the series is part of events like the Motul Petit Le Mans, Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen and the Michelin GT Challenge at VIR. It’s a terrific schedule of iconic venues that can only add to the allure both for Molitor’s MRS Team and the up and coming drivers.
Molitor’s European pedigree and successful history will doubtlessly mean their entry into American Porsche Racing strikes fear into the hearts of their domestic rivals and the fact that a seat may be available in a series primarily aimed at semi-professional and aspiring professional drivers represents an opportunity too good to miss.
